Story of Change Indonesia - Obaja Gobai

From wounds to bridges: a journey through trustbuilding

Obaja Gobai

Obaja Gobai grew up in Central Papua in an environment where injustice was not the exception but the norm. Oppression, intimidation, and human rights violations shaped daily life for his family and community, leaving deep wounds and a hardened distrust toward security forces and government institutions. That distrust was not irrational - it was the accumulated weight of unequal law enforcement and policies that too often left Papuan communities on the margins.

Change began when Obaja joined the Trustbuilding Program Indonesia's Trauma Healing and Peacebuilding component. One of the program's simplest exercises became a turning point: mapping his own life-event graph, a visual record of the moments that had shaped his pain. What might have looked like a modest writing exercise became something far more significant - the first time Obaja had been invited to face his own history honestly, rather than carry it silently.

From that starting point, the transformation deepened. Obaja found himself able to engage openly with people from ethnic and cultural backgrounds he had once viewed with suspicion including police and military personnel, the very uniforms that had once symbolized threat. He came to a realization that reshaped his worldview: hostility was never rooted in someone's ethnicity or profession, but in wounds that had never been acknowledged or given space to heal.

That insight is now the core of what Obaja carries forward. Pain and trauma, he learned, must be named and witnessed - not to dwell in them, but to move through them. Left unspoken, these wounds don't disappear; they quietly shape perspectives, relationships, and futures in ways that deepen division. Yet faced with courage and acknowledged honestly, even the deepest wounds can become a doorway - for Obaja, and for the wider community of Indigenous Papuans walking the same path - toward a fuller, more reconciled life - Obaja Gobai
